Standard Reverse Images
|
The Reverse of each USW card has information about the card, a classification and dialing instructions. The Legacy Series 1&2 are vertical cards. After the Legacy Series, the Standard Reverse is horizontal. Issues co-sponsored with other companies or organizations have special reverse designs (which do not necessarily fit these rules) and are shown with the card. The following images are representative examples of USW standard reverses. Information includes a description of the obverse image, usually located beneath the dialing instructions, but may vary (e.g., Global Telecard Company, image shown above). The cards usually indicate where they were produced (Germany, France and Canada), but some do not. The date of production or date of issue (may not be the same as the date of release), quantity produced and expiration date (starting in 1997) are printed. Notable exceptions are the Coins Complimentary 1st & 2nd Runs (C), CardEx 95 (C) and the Circle K (P) Cards which do not indicate quantity made. Note, all USW cards prior to 1997 and many after 1997 do not have an expiration date and, therefore, do not expire (theoretically). The Classification, lower left corner, is (1) a number for regular issues. USW also indicates how many cards are in the series. The example below is from the Legacy #2 Set: USW Series 2, Card 1 of 5. (2) "C" indicates a Complimentary card, always $1. (3) "S" indicates a Special issue, denominations vary. (4) "P" indicates a Private issue. Note, many cards (in all classifications) are individually numbered. The first cards were for Local and US Long Distance calls only. As new services became available and new customers were targeted, the Standard Reverse changed, adding International andSpanish dialing instructions. |

Sample Cards Issued US West began issuing Sample Cards in 1997. There are
five types (listed below): (1) VOID punched through
the card, (2) SAMPLE printed, (3) Sample Card
printed, (4) TEST CARD printed and (5) both Sample
Card printed and VOID punched out through the
card. Although Sample cards were supposed to be produced for
each issue, there are some notable exceptions - Valentine
Day, Global Telecard Company and the Millennium Phone $10
card. Note, there were no Sample Cards produced for issues
co-produced with other companies (Season's Greetings 1997
with G&D, GCA sets, CTST 1999 Chicago with G&D and
ORGA Art Competition with Deutsch Telecom).

Notes
|
(*1) |
Although a unit value is not printed on this card (as on the others) a card reader indicates the appropriate value. Also note, the photos in MCC all show F1024 with written values instead of printed values. I cannot explain the discepancy. |
|
(*2) |
MCC indicates Proof cards exist. I am uncertain whether all Proof cards are holed or not. |
|
(*3) |
MCC indicates some cards exist with incorrect reverses printed. |
|
(*4) |
Christmas cards were sent to VIPs with the Minneapolis-St. Paul Winter Carnival phonecard. |
|
(*5) |
MCC indicates two "versions" exist - one for the Show, another for Collectors. In fact, all the cards are identical. 1,000 cards were distributed at the Show and 250 cards were held back by US West for distribution to collectors ONLY through US West's authorized distributors (KARS Unlimited and USA Cards). |
|
(*6) |
1997 saw the introduction of Expiration dates on US West cards. |
|
(*7) |
As the first Private USW Issue released, the two card Telecard Times 3rd Anniversary Set was distributed with third anniversary issues of The Telecard Times (Greg Loibl, editor) magazines. 5,000 Red and 5,000 Blue cards were included in issues sealed in plastic wrapping. The extra cards (125 of each) were held back by USW for collectors |
|
(*8) |
1,010 cards initially were issued. However, 863 were returned because of flaws in the chip specifications (and became the 'holed' versions). Interestingly, this was supposed to be USW's first Private issue (release delayed due to the chip problem, so the Telecard Times issue was released first) and their policy was to produce 10 extra cards for internal purposes, hence the mintage of 1,010 cards. However, it became obvious that anyone holding all the cards produced could grossly inflate the cost to collectors seeking complete USW sets (does anyone remember the Husky Card from Telcom Alaska?). When the authorized distributors complained, policy immediately changed and USW produced significant numbers of cards in addition to all private orders (for collectors). |
|
(*9) |
From June 20-22, 1997, leaders from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom (the group of Seven Industrialized Nations) and this year's addition of Russia met in Denver, colorado (USA) to address some of the world's toughest problems. A complimentary USW card was produced, as a joint venture with USA Cards, to commemorate the meeting. A companion card, with a very similar obversae, was produced by USA Cards and simultaneously released with the US West issue. |
|
(*10) |
Here is where I disagree with MCC. The Millennium Pay Phone series of cards was in production approximately the same time the Catalog went to press, based on the best information available at the time. MCC lists the Millennium $1, $5, $10 & $20 cards as #79, #80, #81 & #82, all dated August, 1997. Plans at USW must have changed. Although the $1 Complimentary Card was produced in June, 1997 and released by USW in August, 1997, the $5 card was not produced until December, 1997. The $10 card was produced in 1998. I do not believe the $20 (MCC# 82) card was ever produced and base that on three reasons. (1) As an authorized distributor, receiving supplies of every card USW produced, KARS Unlimited was never offered nor received any $20 Millennium cards, (2) Millennium issues were released to KARS on dates scattered over months and (3) USW felt high denomination cards were difficult to sell. The last $20 issue was TeleCard World Atlanta, in April, 1996. Since that issue, the highest denomination released was $10, with the exception of one $15 card produced with the Life's Better Here Series - and was not sold seperatly. The $20 Millennium card will not be included as a USW issue. |
|
(*11) |
Cards produced after MCC was printed will only indicate a KARS# |
|
(*12) |
Life's Better Here is a 15 Card Promotional Set with a "Cover Card" (first USW $15 card) plus 14 cards with drawings to represent each of the states in the USW region. 1,500 sets were produced. 1,000 hard cover albums were produced (100 autographed by the artist) and the remaining 500 sets were sold as sealed cards without an album. USW made an exception for this set with no expiration date for the cards. |
|
(*13) |
Five cards were chosen from the Life's Better Here Series. The same drawings were used, but the cards were "reprinted" with the logo "Changing the Shape of Money" |
|
(*14) |
The CardEx 97 Commemorative Set was produced by KARS Unlimited and was a joint venture between.KARS Unlimited, US West, Bell Canada, Cable & Wireless, Inc. and Lucas Color Cards. It features a two card puzzle set (KARS Unlimited, time by Cable & Wireless, Inc. and Bell Canada) plus a composite card by USW. A companion card (Salute To Belgium) produced by KARS Unlimited with Cable & Wireless, Inc. was sold with the Set at CardEx 97 (Brussels, Belgium (October 24-26, 1997). |
|
(*15) |
USW introduces Spanish instructions |
|
(*16) |
The Interoperability Card was produced by US West and GTE, two of the founding members of the Global Chipcard Alliance (GCA). It commemorates the first interoperability agreement in North America and symbolizes the initial step of many which will eventually culminate in the implementation of the GCA vision: worldwide interoperabilty. Note: the Interoperability Card displays the Millennium Phone in the middle with insets of the USW Millennium Card (left) and GTE Millennium Card (right). The USW and GTE Interoperability Card versions only differ in one way. The USW version mentions USW then GTE - the GTE version mentions GTE then USW. |
|
(*17) |
The Millennium $5 Reprint Obverse is identical to the original release. They can only be distinguished by their reverses. The reverse of each card indicates a different date and series number. Insets were included to document the cards are, indeed, different issues. |
|
(*18) |
USW ceased operations so suddenly it was impossible for me to determine if the Remote Cards were ever released for public use. |
|
(*19) |
Deutsch Telecom card denominated as 6 DM or 3.07 Euro (E). It is also unusual for a German card to expire. |
