Olympic Centenary Puzzle Set A 16 card set, issued for use in Hong Kong, but denominated in US Dollars. All cards were shipped to the Standard Chartered Bank. However, some were returned to be stripped. First Union Bank stopped the practice of allowing returns, after this transaction.

In accordance with US government regulations to discontinue the use of cash (with all its inherent problems), the Military was one of the earliest SVC issuers. Given to all trainees, Military SVCs replaced the need to issue checks and exchange cash for servicemen on selected military bases. Wall mounted readers were placed on base to check balances. Stores and agencies on base, as well as local banks, accepted SVCs. In addition, the cards were used for non-financial purposes such as medical record storage, building access and location (like punching a time clock - to know who was where). I'll bet there were other uses I am not aware of. The FLW system went live in May, 1997 and the Fort Benning Georgia (FBG) system on Feb 5, 1999. Several issues were produced and different expiration dates are know to exist. Males and Females received different amounts. At Fort Leonard Wood (FLW), men received a $200 card, women a $260 card. Servicemen were encouraged to redeem remaining cash upon completing a stay at the base of issue. However, any unused balance not redeemed after the expiration date was automatically transferred to the checking or savings account on record with the military. Apparently, the allotments were increased in 1998 (?), with Males receiving $260, Females $315. The First Union Visa Cash cards utilized a special numbering system on the reverse. For example, the first FLW card, below, has the following number: 801-B8278XFLW. This can be interpreted as (801) = location 8, issue #01; B = Boy; 8278X = eXactly 8,278 cards were issued; FLW = Fort Leonard Wood. Compare the next card: 803-G3572XFLW (this is the 3rd FLW Girl's issue of 3,572 cards). The Visa Cash system was supported by First Union Bank and NationsBank. Other systems (e.g. the Smart City system by Mellon Bank at Fort Sill) and other denomiantions were used. Please visit the Military SVC Library Page, on my web site, for other examples. |
