The Jacksonville Jaguars was the first NFL Team to utilize Stored Value Cards (SVCs) for sales of food, beverages and novelties at designated locastons throughout their Stadium. The Schlumberger cards were produced, for the Jaguars, by First Union.
As one of the early First Union SVC programs (even before their involvement with Visa Cash), card deployment was different from what we became used to (with Visa Cash). The cards were printed, loaded with value and then shipped to Jacksonville. In order to work with a Merchant's equipment, a card needed to be activated. In other words, "cards in the vault" were already loaded, displayed their value on a card reader, but would not function to make a transaction. KARS has designated these cards as Unactivated (or Specimen). Cards were activated in batches and distributed to sales points. Only then could they function in a Mechant's equipment for a transaction. KARS has designated these cards as Activated (or Mint). One of the requirements of the activation process is to physically pass a card through the machine and make contact with the chip. A byproduct of the activation process is the chip appears to have been "scratched" with a set of parallel lines.
These cards are Uncirculated but can be visibly distnguished. Therefore, KARS (as the sole distributor for First Union and the Jacksonville Jaguars) decided to acknowledge Unactivated and Activated types of cards. Total mintages were released by First Union, but we don't know how many of a particular denomination were activated and sold. When cards were destroyed at the end of the project, most were Unactivated and some were unsold Activated. Thus, many denominations have become rarities in the Unactivated condition. Supply and demand will eventually determine the relative values. Mintages include Unactivated + Activated cards.
